Our Picasso Art Portraits!

Please enjoy our Picasso portraits. We looked at different portraits the artist Picasso had done. We discussed and identified that the key concept to drawing a Picasso portrait is to draw two sides to a face that are the opposite or at least look very different.

We then went off and drew our own Picasso influenced portrait of a buddy in class. We had to draw in pencil first, then we used pastels to colour in the portraits, and lastly we used black pastel to outline the facial features like eyes, nose, ears, and mouth.

Week 8 - Working together as a team!

Today Room 7 worked together in their desk groups and negotiated as a team different jobs they needed to do to complete a team challenge. We were learning how to use our multiple intelligence "People Smart".
To work as a team we had team monitors, a manager, a recorder, a speaker, and director. We worked together to discuss what teamwork looks like and does not look like using a T-Chart.
After this we worked again as a team to talk about how we felt during the team challenge. We used a P.M.I. Chart to list down the Plus (positives), Minus (negatives), and anything else Interesting we noticed.

Plus: It was fun! We worked together, getting together. We were thinking really hard. Listening. Respect by helping each other.
Minus: Not listening. Calling out or yelling. Felt left out or not sharing ideas.
Interesting: Started out bad, but then it got better in the end. We were able to work together better.

As a class we decided that it would be a good idea to do more team work challenges so that we learn how we can work better as a team. We felt that this would help us to have more Plus' than Minus'.

Here are some photo's of us working in teams together.

QUESTION  What do you think teamwork looks like?

Week 7 - Exploring the Multiple Intelligences

Here we are working together as a group.

We have spent part of our week exploring each multiple intelligence as part of our inquiry about the brain and how we learn.

Room 7 and 8 got together to work through different activities that helped us to learn more about each multiple intelligence.

In both of the pictures below we are drawing and observing from our surroundings.
Jaymie working all by himself in a quiet spot.
Here we are listening to music/sounds.

In these two photo's we had to move our bodies into different positions.

There are eight different multiple intelligences. They include; Nature Smart, Number Smart, Body Smart, Word Smart, Self Smart, People Smart, Picture Smart, and Music Smart.

In the photo's above you can see 5 of the 8 Multiple Intelligences.
Can you guess which is which?

Week 6 - How to care for our body and brain.

Friday was an exciting day because Room 5, 7 and 8 got together to watch a documentary about the brain. Please enjoy the video below that we really enjoyed.

We learned that it is very important to care for our body and brain by:
  • drinking lots of water
  • getting lots of sleep and rest
  • ensuring we are not too hot or too cold
  • maintain a healthy diet that is not too high in sugar
  • have regular brainbreaks
  • use the brain often and do lots of challenges to help our brain work faster and improve our memory.

What do you think you could do to help care for your body and brain?

Wet n' Wild Tabloid Sports

Today was Wet n' Wild Tabloid Sports Day!
We are so lucky that we had such beautiful hot and sunny weather.

We are in WEKA house and our house colour is red! We got into the spirit by dressing up in as much red we could find!

We also did crazy things with our hair!!!

We all met in the hall and sat in our Houses. Weka sang 'Let's Go Weka, Let's Go!' It got loud very quickly!

There were lots of different fun rotations to do. In these pictures we had to try and fill up another bucket by carrying a small bowl of water on top of our head through a tricky obstacle.
What did you most enjoy about Wet n' Wild Tabloid Sports?
What rotation did you enjoy the most?

Exploring the Brain!!!!

Wednesday was such a fun day of exploration! We were able to look at a real cow brain and we used our virtue of courage to touch it. Looking at a cow brain has helped us to understand what our own brain looks like and we then went straight to our SPARKS book to draw the brain and jot down words to describe what it looked like and felt like. After this we then used our SPARKS book to write about our experience.

Here are some sentences below;

The cow brain felt squishy, icky - Ayla
The brain looks like long worms and bunch of worms all together - Krista
It look like two sponge stacked together - Nicole
It is squishy and it is soft. The Maori word is roro - Ayshia
It feels like raw meat - Jade
I didn't want to touch it but I was brave - Lorenzo

Enjoy our photo's below of our exploration!

Our SPARKS book drawing and jottings about the experience.
Here you can see the brain, including the cerebellum, and brain stem.

Please feel free to comment.
What do you know about the brain?
What questions do you have about the brain?

Week 5!

Another very busy week we have had! This term we are inquiring about who we are as learners. So far we have looked at Frankton School's Mission Statement and what it means to us. We understood that we are always learning  where ever we are for the rest of our life and we are responsible for our own learning. Here is our brainstorm below.

We have also been learning about whether we are a visual, kinaesthetic, or auditory learner using a simple survey online. Please visit the link below. It has been a lot of fun learning about how we learn best!
