Christmas Homework Task

For the last two weeks of the term, Room 7 spent time at home on a Christmas themed Homework task. We needed to design and make 1 of 4 things. The most creative of each challenge received spot prizes. The 4 challenges are below including awesome photos so that you can see what Room 7 created.

1)  Design a Santa Super Sleigh that will help Santa deliver all the presents faster.

2)Design a trap to capture Santa.

3)Design a chimney that will help Santa get in and out of the house quickly.

4)Design the ultimate present ever.

Our new classroom!!

Back and forth, back and forth we go. Carrying desk tote trays to another room is exhausting. The desks were heavy, filled with loads of stuff. We're moving to Room 3 because Mrs Dodd is in Room 3 next year. We are getting ready for next year and we helped Mrs Dodd carry all the tote trays to the new room. It took a long time, but we finished!

Here are some words to describe how we feel about our new room;
  • We still have an interactive whiteboard.
  • We have Room 2 (empty space) next door to us.
  • It's a newer room. It was built last year in 2011.
  • We still have desks.
  • There are extra computers.
  • We have a microwave next to our room.

Student Led Conferences!

Tonight we held our student led conferences. It was a fantastic way for us to share our learning with our siblings, parents and grandparents. We showed them our goals in our learning books. After this we showed all our work around the classroom. At the end of our conferences we said thank you to our guests and went home with big smiles on our faces!

Here are some photos of us practising saying our learning goals earlier in the day.

Gross Science Experiment - Baking Soda Popper!

We did a really cool experiment the other day. We got a plastic bag and we put warm water and vinegar into it. After that we measured some baking soda and wrapped it inside a paper towel. Next we put the paper towel VERY carefully into the plastic bag and zipped it up.

What happened next???????

We went outside to watch what happened to the plastic bag. It blew up but it didn't pop. We think that we should try it again but make sure that we follow the instructions carefully. We think the water was not warm enough.

This is awesome! If you want, you can be like a monkey and chuck it around to see what happens!

Fairy Tales Fun

Room 7 enjoyed the fairy tale Goldilocks and the three bears so much that they decided to write their own versions. They then prepared their own storyboards of the three most popular 'new' versions to turn into a play. One group wanted to use play dough or plastine to make the characters come to life.

Here are some photos of our progress so far. Keep checking in to see more progress!

Frisky Fish Cinquain Poems

Room 7 recently experimented with cellophane fish to see what would happen when we did different things with the fish such as put it on a hard, cold surface, hold it in our hand or put it on a damp paper towel.

We then wrote a cinquain poem about our fish. We needed to know what a verb and an adjective was in order to write a cinquain poem.

What do you think happened to the fish?

Andy Warhol Inspired Art

Room 7 explored how the artist Andy Warhol used colour in creative, colourful and unexpected ways. We thought we would give it a go too!

Storyboarding our Fairy Tales

Today Room 7 spent some time storyboarding their own stories of Goldilocks and the three bears. They decided to write their own versions and now they are preparing to make them into plays or movies.

They used a storyboard template today to plan in groups. They needed to think about what was happening at the beginning, middle and end. They needed to think about what the characters were doing and saying.

Here are some photos of our planning so far. Please check in again soon to see our progress.

Reading with the Emerald Group.

Emerald group read the journal story, Time for a Spell by David Hill. They were then inspired to design their own alien invasions including what the aliens look like and what weapons they possess.

Campbell says, "they have a weapon that will shrink people and suck them up."

Update on the Baking Soda Volcano Experiment.

During the week, Room 7 split up into groups to make their own baking soda volcanoes. We wanted to see what would happen if we added more vinegar. We decided that the more vinegar we added, the more the volcano expanded and eventually overflowed. When we stopped adding the vinegar, the volcano went back down again.
We are very clever scientists and recorded what happened in our SPARKS books too.
